History

Since Robert E. Lee High School opened its doors in 1958, it has served the suburban community of Springfield, a community that held high expectations for its students and strongly supported the school and its programs. Those expectations and strong parental support continue today.
The school reflects the goals of the community as it holds high academic expectations for all students and, at the same time, provides programs to meet the increasing cultural diversity of the student population.

Program Emphasis
These programs prepare students to be successful in a constantly changing world and to pursue advanced educational and vocational plans.
Student achievement is rewarded through incentive programs such as the principal's All "A" Honor Roll luncheon.
The integration of technology into the instructional program continues to be a major initiative.  All instructional disciplines make extensive use of the school s two multimedia computer labs. Other computer skills are developed through Lee's three levels of computer graphics and the technical drawing and engineering classes, which make use of a fully computerized CAD lab. A second initiative is the wiring of the entire high school to network all school computers.
Another initiative this year is the implementation of a block, college like schedule. After a year of study and preparation, the faculty and staff have implemented a schedule that will expand the instructional time in classes by alternating the days each class meets. Teachers and students will be assessing the impact that an extended class period will have on instruction, attendance, and student performance.
The continued emphasis on maintaining positive communications with parents is addressed through mini-conferences, orientation programs, newsletters, and special parent evenings. Parent volunteers are highly visible in the building and on the school governance council.
In a cooperative effort to maintain the high level of student achievement and sense of community, the faculty, staff, and parents continue to examine programs, review data, and assess the school s mission of preparing students for their futures and helping them develop lifelong learning skills.

Unique Programs
Robert E. Lee High School is committed to creating a challenging academic environment that meets the instructional needs of an increasingly diverse student body.
To fulfill this goal, the school will focus on the following objectives during the 1996-97 school year:

  • Raise the academic aspirations and performance of all students through programs that support at-risk students, encourage respect for differences, teach problem-solving skills, promote student-centered inquiry, and develop students intellectual independence and curiosity.
  • Continue to expand the integration of technology into the instructional program through ongoing teacher training, course offerings for students, and availability of hardware and instructional software in core programs and elective courses.
  • A student leadership course that develops decision-making skills and fosters student responsibility.
  • Saturday school alternative to suspension program.
  • Increase the communication within the building through the development and implementation of a local area network and continuance of the high quality of communication with the Lee High School parent community .
  • Determine the impact of a block schedule on daily student attendance, classroom behavior, and student achievement.
  • A partnership with Apple Federal Credit Union that operates a student-staffed on-site branch, and a partnership with Lockheed Martin that provides tutoring in math and science.
  • A student peer mediation course and program that teach mediation and problem-solving skills.
  • A totally computerized computer-aided drafting lab.
